Jim Steranko produced 15 covers for Marvel Comics in 1972 and 1973. I always thought they were poorly printed and inferior to work he had done a few years earlier. I mentioned this to Jim and he responded at the time, "I am concentrating on areas of graphic design I feel I am weak in: composition, shape, depth, style, etc.
By working out various new problems, I am able to bring my repository of knowledge to bear on material different than I've ever done before." When I saw the originals in 1974, I was stunned by the beauty and brilliance of these works. We present here the original black and white art compared to what was printed on
the comic book covers.
